Nigerian Indepedence Day celebrated in Mississippi – Bata Dance & Talking Drum
Nigeria celebrates its independence day on 1 October every year.
West Africa’s most populous nation – home to approximately 186 million in 2018 – freed itself from British colonial rule on this date in 1960 and the anniversary is being marked in Jackson Mississippi on Saturday, October 14th with cultural performances, giveaways, traditional food, and raffle draw. Ade Heritage Group among other cultural groups showcased a bata dance and talking drum performance. The delectable audience cheered along as the volunteer bata dancers demonstrate some bata feetwork styles. Friends and families joined the dance, sprayed some money on the dancers. According to the African culture, spraying of legal tender notes during any celebration shows a friendly appreciation of the celebrant or entity.
